The Hummingbirds' Gift
This book, The Hummingbirds' Gift, is by Stefan Czernecki and Timothy Rhodes. This book is ranged to the students of the age of 4-9 and is a piece of Traditional Literature. This book is a tale about the villagers of Tzitzuntan and how they learned how to weave straw in order to make money during the drought. This village is known for the hummingbirds because Tzintzuntzan is the Tarascan Indian name that means, "the place of the hummingbirds." They were worried that the beautiful creatures would disappear when the drought happened so they created little flowers from pots so the birds would stay. As a thank you, the hummingbirds brought the people straw and shown them how to make straw figurines. They then sold those figurines at the festival for the Day of the Dead. They were able to make enough money for the year and celebrate that day with all the other villagers. At the end of the story, it begins to rain and everyone was happy because the river would be full and the flowers would bloom so that the hummingbirds would be there to stay.
