The Last Princess the Story of Princess Ka'iulani of Hawai'i by Fay Stanley and illustrated by Diane Stanley is a noninfectious book about the story of Princess Ka'ulani. This book is targeted for 6 to 9 year old children. Ka'ulani, daughter of Princess Miriam Likelike and Archibald Cleghorn was the last of the royal family of Hawai'i before it became annexed to the United States on August 12th,1898. After Ka'iulani's mother died, Ka'ulani moved to England to get her education that was fit for a future queen. As missionaries took over Hawai'i and became a disturbance to the land, Ka'iulani decided to go back and try to save her country. After arriving, Hawai'i was annexed into the United States and she became ill. She died without marrying and fought bravely to preserve the freedom of her people. I would use this in my classroom to talk about Hawaii History possibly during Asian Pacific Islander Month. I would also maybe use this book for annexing of certain places as the United States grows larger.
