The War That Saved My Life
The War That Saved My Life is piece of historical fiction written by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. This book is intended for 8-12 year old. This tearjerker is a Newbery Honor Book. Ada Maria Smith is an eleven year old born with a clubbed foot who had World War II save her life. Ada, abused and battered by her mother, was forced to look out a window as life passed her by. An abnormality led to being called "rubbish" and a "monster" by her Mother(mam). Jamie, her younger brother, had the better life out of the two. Able to go to school, come and go as he pleased, and have friends made Ada hope for a better life. When World War II commenced and bombing was a threat, Ada and Jamie were evacuated from London to England countryside. With nothing but some bread, the clothes on their back, and a dream, Ada hoped to see something different. Being the last of the evacuees, Lady Thorton, introduced and argued with Susan Smith to take the two in. Throughout the story, Ada had to learn that although that Ms.Smith didn't want them at first, she can learn to love and truly care for them. Throughout the story, Ada continuously said that Ms. Smith "isn't real." Ms. Smith had to learn that she is capable of loving someone after the death of her best friend. At the end of the story, Ms. Smith goes back to London to take Ada and Jamie back from Mam and ended up being saved from a bomb being dropped on her house.
