Crown An Ode to the Fresh Cut

Crown An Ode to the Fresh Cut by Derrick Barnes and illustrated by Gordon C. James is 2019-2020 Texas Bluebonnet Award winner, Caldecott Medal winner, John Newbery Medal winner, and Coretta Scott King winner. This book is about a young boy and his experience in the barber shop. He goes through the process imagining his life as royalty. The cape being his garb of royalty, the razor framing swagger, the heavy importance of haircut can change the world. "Feeling like a million bucks- and some change" the shop leaves everyone who steps in feel like royalty, flawless, and magnificent. This book is so cute to build self confidence in the black community. This is great to be used for a shared reading. We need this kind of confidence in all of our students.
