Abuela
Abuela, written by Arthur Dorros and illustrated by Elisa Kleven, is a multicultural book about a little girl, Rosalba, and her grandmother. This book is a winner of the Parent's Choice Award, An Library of Congress Children's Book of the Year and an ALA Notable book. The age appropriate to this book is 3-7 year olds. Rosalba's grandmother, mostly Spanish speaking, takes Rosalba on an adventure to the park. Rosalba imagines flying and begins to be carried away by birds and taken to different places in the world. She flies above the city, to the docks, to the airport, to the place where her aunt and uncle works, and she rests in a cloud with her grandmother. At the end of the book her grandmother and the granddaughter goes on another adventure. This is a delightful book about family, heritage, and exploring. I would use this to create a togetherness with my Spanish speaking EL's. I would also use this as a book to encourage imagination.
